Designer Christopher Bates
The passion that Vancouver, Canada native Christopher Bates expresses is almost palpable, and apparent in every aspect of his life, in and out of the fashion world. Educated at the renowned Istituto Marangoni in Milan, Bates established a design studio in Milan in 2014 to produce, with pride, in this splendid country. Since his debut, Bates has received numerous accolades, including the Canadian Menswear Designer of the Year Award at the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards in 2019 and the Visionary Award from Fashion Group International in 2018.
He is versatile and particularly focused on beautiful, innovative details. He has an innate curiosity and is inspired by anatomy, architecture, geometry, and from other art forms such as cooking. His ultimate style icon is Sean Connery’s James Bond. He sells to influential retailers such as Breuninger in Germany, and Harry Rosen, George-C, and Gotstyle in Canada.
He also designed new uniforms for Air Canada. Unveiled worldwide in spring 2018, the looks won two Image of the Year Awards from the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors, as well as the Best Design for Corporate Clothing honor from the Professional Clothing Awards in London.
In fall 2021, he launched his biggest project to date: a Top Gun X Christopher Bates collection officially licensed by Paramount Pictures. The initial drop includes bomber jackets, sweatshirts, T-shirts, volleyball tank-tops, and polarized aviator sunglasses. The collection is a nostalgic homage to the original film and looks to leverage the excitement of the new Top Gun: Maverick film coming out May 27, 2022.
He has been featured in many top fashion and style publications and has dressed many famous people, including actors Michael Shannon, Don Cheadle, John Boyega, and Wilson Cruz; Formula 1 drivers Charles Leclerc, Antonio Giovinazzi, and George Russell; professional athletes Jose Bautista, DeMarre Carroll, and Tosaint Ricketts; musicians Shawn Mendes and Howie-D, and others.
