"Chew Chips & Biscuits"
inspired by
Your Dog, 2002 - Yoshitomo Nara

Dorothy Willetts, Principal of Willetts Design & Associates, based her dress design on Yoshimoto Nara's Your Dog. Your Dog represents a dog's dual nature both as a cuddly companion to children and a frightening creature who is often much larger that the child. "I have always been a fan of Yoshimoto's ability to express a loss of innocence with just cartoon images and their underlying messages."

The dress represents both girlish innocence and its loss to adult sexuality. The skirt is Lori Weitzner's Newsworthy and Mist wallpapers, the top is Bergamo's Mikado fabric, the belt is made from foam core and fabric, the trim is Samuel & Sons, and the pillbox hat is fabric from Kneedler Fauchere.

"Broken Hearts"
inspired by
Twin 6' Hearts, 1999 - Jim Dine

Dorothy Willetts of Willetts Design & Associates has created a gown reflecting the strong textural elements of Jim Dine's sculpture, Twin 6' Hearts, combining soft romantic feelings of love, and the cold, hard reality of a broken heart. The Bergamo iridescent fabrics underneath the cut-out design of the grey Bergamo "Cupido" fabric were used to bring a three-dimensional aspect to the dress. The exquisite red silk fabrics from Jim Thompson were used to represent the striking lightning bolt shaped broken line running through the dress. "I wanted to convey the heartfelt emotions of romance and the pain of loss by making a soft gown that had been broken like a heart can be. We have all experienced some form of the pleasant, excited and elated feelings of first love to the deep pain felt when love dies or is torn away from us."
