"Summer II"
inspired by
Spider II, 1995 - Louise Bourgeois

A fourth generation desert native, Lance O'Donnell graduated with honors from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and in 1994 received his Master of Architecture from UCLA. His office, 02 Architecture, is dedicated to discovering a poetic connection to site and sustainably crafted modernism. Lance designed, built and lives in a "zero energy," LEED Platinum home. When not designing, teaching or thinking about how to improve the built environment's relationship to our fragile eco-system, Lance enjoys being in-the-moment surfing, rock climbing or mountain biking. Fascinated by the extraordinary movement and unique adaption to environment of all things natural, Spider II, sculpted by Louise Bourgeois, beautifully illustrates this allure. At once fragile, at times deadly, and capable of intricately beautiful patterns I used these qualities as my inspiration. My approach sought to embrace the delicate movement and transform the eight legs, into an eight-segment umbrella. The fabric segments can then detach from the umbrella and become a summer cover-up.
