Designer of the Week: Juan Carlos Obando

Couture designer Juan Carlos Obando was the featured designer for the fourth annual Fashion Week El Paseo. His collection was shown on Saturday, March 29, at 7 p.m., on the runway in the “Great White Fashion Tent” off of El Paseo in Palm Desert.

A native of Branquilla, Colombia, Obando began his visual communications journey in Miami. Possessing a natural ability to parlay the beauty that surrounds him into tangible creations, Obando transformed himself from a University of Miami design student to one of the most highly sought-after art directors in the advertising field.

Obando worked with advertising powerhouses such as Bates Worldwide, Young & Rubicam, and Saatchi & Saatchi, creating “modern eye candy” for global brands such as BMW, Perrier, Procter & Gamble, L’Oreal Paris, and Walt Disney Co. Obando created the “Let imagination run your life,” ad campaign for Toyota that aired during Super Bowl XXXVI.

In the fall of 2004, Obando launched his privately held fashion company, Bureau Beauté Inc., which houses the Juan Carlos Obando Label, which met great acclaim at its L.A. Fashion Week debut.
